Common serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) is a flowering tree native to eastern North America of medium height (some reports state it is usually 25 feet and others that it gets up to 66 feet). It will grow in a wide range of light conditions from shade to full sun, but it prefers dry, well-drained soils. The sweet fruit has been eaten for centuries and enjoyed fresh or made into jams, wines, or baked into food.
Common serviceberries are obviously valuable for wildlife because of their flowers and fruit, but also are hosts to 124 species of caterpillars, making them more valuable than most plants on this list. As widespread as they are, and as tolerant as they are to different conditions, they would make a great addition to any native garden or landscape.
